My new hiking boots and I are bonding. I think I love them, the way they protect my ankles and make my feet feel like bludgeons.
I'm nervous, though. I like to be alone and settled, and I'm headed to a month of living with strangers in an unfamiliar setting. And there's one thing I do lately, to pass the time when I'm nervous: watch Disney Channel shows.
When I was freaked about track meets this spring, I let the horribleness of Sonny With A Chance numb my brain. The night before our musical theater showcase, lacing my shoes with ribbons and eating compulsively, I watched Hannah Montana. And now, worried about meeting people I don't know, I've been mainlining both JONAS and Wizards of Waverly Place. There is nothing I can learn from these shows and little to laugh at, but they have an anesthetizing effect that helps me calm down.

Disney Channel shows have that same numbing effect on me. Fortunately my sister's always nearby to clock me with a blunt object if I get stupefied enough to actually laugh at one of Miley Cyrus' attempts at humor.
